What is a Community School?
Community Schools provide a student-centered approach to education by bringing together schools, families, and community partners to support the whole child. They go beyond academics by offering health services, enrichment programs, and family support in one location. This model creates safe, inclusive environments where every student can thrive and families feel connected.
Imagine a school prioritizing academic excellence while fostering a culture where students feel valued and families are engaged. Community Schools break down barriers to learning and redefine their role as pillars of support within the community. We work to build places where students flourish, friendships develop, and families access vital resources.
The Grass Valley School District proudly embraces the Community School model as a foundational educational approach, not as an added program or temporary initiative, but as a long-term, equity-focused framework. Community Schools are a unifying strategy that integrates all existing school and district efforts into a sustainable, student-centered support system. This model focuses on what matters most in a coordinated, responsive manner. It serves as the lens through which we manage our schools, ensuring that each site is guided by its community's unique needs, strengths, and voices.
Two of our district's schools—Lyman Gilmore Middle School and Margaret Scotten Elementary—have been awarded a grant to support this initiative. However, all district schools are dedicated to providing essential services that benefit our students and their families. Through collaboration, we are enhancing education and fostering a stronger, more connected community where every child has the opportunity to succeed.
Join us on this exciting journey as we bring the Community Schools initiative to life. Together, we can make a difference by ensuring our children excel academically and develop into well-rounded individuals ready for the future. Your support and involvement are crucial in creating these welcoming spaces where everyone belongs!
